PEDIATRIC NEWS UPDATES
OCTOBER 2008

October 08 - October is Attachment Parenting Month

We’ve teamed up with Attachment Parenting International (API) and other AP advocates in declaring next month Attachment Parenting (AP) Month. Our theme of "Giving Our Children Presence" is a nice balance to upcoming holiday activity that often involves material giving.

We’d like to connect the greater Attachment Parenting community in celebrating this unifying theme as we work together to raise awareness for all parents.

AP Month Central www.APmonth.AttachmentParenting.org is the AP Month information gateway featuring celebrations to join, special offers, contests, giveaways, an event toolkit and all the information necessary to help you participate in AP Month.

Martha (Sears) will be guest blogging in October and we’ll donate a portion of AskDrSears.com's October sling sales to Attachment Parenting International

(API) www.AttachmentParenting.org to further their mission to educate and support all parents in raising secure, joyful and empathic children in order to strengthen families and create a more compassionate world.

We hope you’ll join us in celebrating AP Month!

For more information, below is a press release on Attachment Parenting month and the many supporters:

Leading Parenting Resources Support Attachment Parenting Month

AskDrSears.com, Mothering Magazine, Infant Massage USA and Others Partner with Attachment Parenting International to Celebrate Attachment Parenting Month

Nashville, TN – October 1, 2008 – Attachment Parenting International (API, www.attachmentparenting.org), a non-profit global network of parenting support groups with more than 60 chapters in North America, today announced that popular parenting resources AskDrSears.com, Mothering Magazine and Infant Massage USA have joined with API to celebrate October’s Attachment Parenting month. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City has also shown his support by signing the official AP Month Proclamation.

Begun last year by noted parenting authors, speakers and AskDrSears.com founders Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears, R.N., Attachment Parenting month will be celebrated across the U.S. according to this year’s theme, "Giving Our Children Presence."

"We are proud to be part of this national event, and to celebrate the importance of giving our children presence," said Peggy O’Mara, founder and editor-in-chief of Mothering Magazine. "We hope that by partnering with API for Attachment Parenting month, we can help spread the word about the most valuable gift we can give our children: connected, quality time with us."

Attachment Parenting chapters across the country are recognizing Attachment Parenting Month through local events spotlighting the importance of giving children presence. In honor of Attachment Parenting Month, API Co-Founders Barbara Nicholson and Lysa Parker will be making appearances at several conferences across the nation and launching their new book on Attachment Parenting, Attached at the Heart. API will hold online events throughout the month, including a blog carnival, and a national membership drive will help spread the word about the importance of a parent's presence in the life of a child.

"We are honored to have the support of these leading parenting resources for Attachment Parenting month," said Lysa Parker, co-founder of API and author. "We are thankful to our partners, our sponsors, our chapters and all the parents who have already committed to celebrating with us this October."

API will promote all AP Month events through its Attachment Parenting Month Central web site, apmonth.attachmentparenting.org, where parents can read and share ways to be more present with their children and locate nearby AP Month celebrations.

Attachment Parenting is based in the practice of nurturing parenting methods that create strong emotional bonds, also known as secure attachment, between children and their parent(s). This style of parenting encourages responsiveness to children's emotional needs, enabling children to develop trust that their needs will be met. As a result, this strong attachment helps children develop the capacity for secure, empathic, peaceful, and enduring relationships that follow them into adulthood.

Attachment Parenting International (API) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit member organization founded in 1994 to network with parents, professionals and like-minded organizations around the world. API’s mission is to educate and support all parents in raising secure, joyful and empathic children in order to strengthen families and create a more compassionate world. In addition to providing assistance in forming Attachment Parenting support groups, API functions as a clearinghouse providing educational materials, research information, consultative, referral and speaker services to promote Attachment Parenting concepts.

API board and advisory board members include such noted parenting authors as Dr. William Sears and Martha Sears, R.N., co-sleeping specialist Dr. James McKenna, Lu Hanessian of LetTheBabyDrive.com, author Alice Miller and Jan Hunt of the Natural Child Project, among others.
