AskDrSears.com - FAQ "CAN'T BREASTFEED"
CAN'T BREASTFEED
"My question for the Dr. Sears family regards my being diagnosed with breast cancer and my inability to breast feed. I just purchased The Baby Book and am upset that I cannot breastfeed, especially after reading how beneficial it is for the baby. Will bottlefeeding hinder my relationship with the baby and will it have long-term effects on the baby's health?
Are there organic or all-natural formulas out there?
Do you have any other advice?
I haven't read your entire book yet, just the beginning, but the "7 BABY
B'S" really worried me."
Keep reading, and you will see that the other 6 baby B’s will help you be a great parent. Yes, we try to encourage moms to breastfeed by explaining all the benefits, and this often makes it look like were are “anti-formula”. Our main focus is trying to inform a mother who is undecided about breastfeeding, and we realize that this can be discouraging for a mother that can’t. Sorry about this.
The 7 baby B’s are some great tools that you can use to get close to your baby. Tools are things you use to complete a job. The better the tools, the easier and the better you can do the job. Notice we use the term "tools" rather than "steps." With tools you can pick and choose which of those fit your personal parent-child relationship. Steps imply that you have to use all the steps to get the job done. Think of attachment parenting as connecting tools, interactions with your infant that help you and your child get connected.
There are many great formulas out there – be sure to pick one that is fortified with DHA (one of the special fats found in breastmilk). One of the organic formula companies, Horizon, is currently shifting their formula products to the “Earth’s Best” brand. Look for this soon.
